Dr. Block Thomas
Thomas Block has over 15 years of experience working in Product Management. He received his PhD in Solid State Chemistry from University of Mainz, Germany and Diploma in Chemistry from Duisburg University, Germany. After his PhD he worked as Postdoctoral Fellow at the IBM Research Center in San Jose, USA, for Hitachi. Before joining Bosch Sensortec as Senior Product Manager for magnetic and environmental sensors (pressure, temperature, humidity, gas), he has held various Product and Project Management positions within the Semiconductor and Photovoltaic industry in companies like Bosch, Schott and Heraeus.
Environmental Sensors in Smart Home Applications
Hearing, sight and touch: these senses have already been implemented in smartphones and other smart devices with MEMS-based inertial sensors or microphones.
The new breakthrough in MEMS technology is environmental sensing. Here we are talking about barometric pressure, humidity, temperature and air quality sensors. By using the Internet of Things to connect everything, environmental sensors can be used in a variety of smart home devices such as thermostats, air quality monitoring devices or other smart home products. The presentation will cover the technical background about how this is made possible as increasingly miniscule sensors are being built in high volumes, with best-in-class performance, providing good value and will surely fit inside every smart home device.
Bosch Sensortec GmbH
Bosch Sensortec GmbH, a fully owned subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH, develops and markets a wide portfolio of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensors and solutions tailored for smartphones, tablets, wearables and hearables, AR/VR devices, drones, robots, smart home and IoT (Internet of Things) applications. The product portfolio includes 3-axis accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers, integrated 6- and 9-axis sensors, smart sensors, barometric pressure sensors, humidity sensors, gas sensors, optical microsystems and comprehensive software. Since its foundation in 2005, Bosch Sensortec has emerged as the MEMS technology leader in the markets it addresses. Bosch has been both a pioneer and a global market leader in the MEMS sensor segment since 1995 and has, to date, sold more than 10 billion MEMS sensors.
The Bosch Group is a leading global supplier of technology and services. It employs roughly 400,000 associates worldwide (as of December 31, 2019). The company generated sales of 77.7 billion euros in 2019.
