Opportunities in Inertial MEMS Manufacturing in China

MEMS inertial sensors have been used in China for over two decades. Initially accelerometers were imported into China for automotive and gaming applications at assembly facilities. Bosch, STMicroelectronics, Invensense (now TDK) and Analog Devices were the first suppliers for these markets, which expanded into the smart phone applications. Resonant MEMS gyroscopes were the second wave of inertial sensors used in China. MEMSIC and MiraMEMS were two inertial sensor companies that began in the US and then opened offices and final test sites in China. These companies manufactured accelerometers using wafers made at MEMS foundries outside of China. Magnetic e-compasses were also developed and marketed in China. Senodia, Hanking Electronics and QST were the first Chinese companies to develop and/or acquire MEMS gyroscope technology and offer Chinese manufactured MEMS gyroscopes. Hanking Electronics combined a 3-axis linear accelerometers and 3-axis gyroscopes onto a single MEMS chip in their most advanced inertial sensor product and now competes with the Bosch, STMicroelectronics and TDK internationally. MEMS barometric pressure sensors are the most recent inertial sensor to enter the market in China. These absolute pressure sensors can provide data on the altitude of the vehicle or person to within accuracies of a few centimeters. In the last few years MEMS foundries have been built in China to fabricate 200mm MEMS wafers for the inertial market
