  • CTO
  • Biography

Dr. Wily Wang received his B.Eng. and M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1984 and 1987 respectively.

From 1987-1993, he was a Lecturer at Dept. of Mechanical Engineering of Sichuan University, China.

In 1996, he obtained his Ph.D degree from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

From 1996 to 2004, Dr. Wang was working with Institute of Microelectronics (IME) in Singapore in MEMS research and development. He was a project leader responsible for various MEMS research projects including pressure sensor, gyroscope, microphones, resonator, etc. His research work had led him to the successes in achieving the world’s first mass-producible silicon microphone and an ultra high SNR (72dB) silicon microphone.

From 2004 to 2010, Dr. Wang founded Silicon Matrix Pte Ltd endeavoring to development and promotion of MEMS microphone.

In 2010, Dr. Wang joined GoerTek Inc as Vice President for MEMS Technology to lead MEMS R&D team as well as technical marketing team. He was later promoted to Corporate VP of Technology responsible for technical development in MEMS, microelectronics and nano-optics. He has made significant contributions to the fast growth of company in these areas. Dr. Wang is currently the CTO of Goertek Microelectronics Inc.

Dr. Wang is an inventor of 117 international patents. He has also published 14 technical papers.

Evolution of MEMS Microphone And Future Outlook

After having been long incubated originally for miniature hearing aid
application, silicon condenser microphone found its adoption in mobile phone applications 17 years ago and has been since then evolved to be ubiquitous in almost all sound transducing applications. Development history of silicon MEMS microphone will be reviewed with insight looks into intrinsic issues and challenges. Lessons and experience from both failed and successful developments will be discussed. As being driven by fast paced mobile phones and smart devices, existing silicon MEMS microphone designs may soon encounter their technical boundary and restraints. Potential disruptive solutions for sustaining growth will be discussed and future outlook of its application roadmap will be envisioned in this talk.
